Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services Leads the Way in Sustainable Health Care

A valued partner of HealthPRO Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services is setting a powerful precedent in the fight against climate change. As the first province in Canada to discontinue the purchase of desflurane, the organization is proving that patient care and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
Did you know?
- 1 hour of desflurane use = 320 km driven by car
- 1 hour of sevoflurane use = just 6.5 km
The difference is staggering. By removing desflurane from use, NL Health Services has made one of the most impactful sustainability decisions available in health care today.
This milestone builds on broader momentum across Canada. In December 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador became the first province to stop purchasing desflurane, followed in January 2025 by the Northwest Territories, which became the first jurisdiction to fully phase it out. In Ontario, dozens of HealthPRO Canada member hospitals, including SickKids, Sunnybrook, University Health Network, Trillium Health Partners, and Michael Garron Hospital, have already eliminated desflurane from their operating rooms, demonstrating the power of collective action to reduce health care’s carbon footprint.
The change also reflects NL Health Services’ broader Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which aligns with recommendations from the Health Accord on climate change and supports the organization’s 2024-26 Strategic Plan.
“Phasing out desflurane has been an important step toward delivering care that benefits both patients and the planet,” said Dr. Gena Bugden, vice president of Medical Services and Academic Affairs and Chief of Staff with NL Health Services. “By choosing a safe and clinically effective alternative, NL Health Services is reducing its carbon footprint while strengthening its commitment to a more sustainable health-care system.”
By taking this bold step, NL Health Services is not only improving environmental outcomes; but also raising the bar for sustainable health care nationwide. Their leadership proves that health systems can act decisively, embrace innovation, and accelerate the shift toward a greener, healthier future for everyone.
