What do you do outside of HealthPRO Canada to keep up with your nursing license?
I work for Chantel’s Place located in the Mississauga Hospital. It's a private, secure area that provides a comfortable and supportive atmosphere for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence irrespective of gender, age, and ethnicity.
What or who inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
I enjoyed science in school and wanted a job in the same field that would provide a wide range of opportunities and continuous learning. My mother tried to talk me out of nursing and pushed me towards being an X-ray and Ultrasound technician, so I enrolled in the program and completed my first year. I wasn’t in love with it, so I transferred into nursing and have never looked back.
What do you find most rewarding about being a nurse?
Nurses make a positive impact, building relationships, and professional growth which often makes nursing an incredibly rewarding career for those who choose it.
How do you stay informed about advancements in wound care and infection prevention and control (IPAC)?
I attend virtual education sessions through professional associations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop and promote best practices in wound care, and infection prevention and control.
What are some emerging trends or innovations in nursing that you believe will significantly shape the future of healthcare?
I believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning will help nurses streamline administrative tasks, analyze patient data more efficiently, and even assist in diagnostics. While Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) will enhance nursing education, simulation training, and patient rehabilitation.
What led you to transition from infection control to sexual assault care?
While working in Infection Control, I covered the Maternity/Child program. I loved working with the Manager and was really impressed with Chantel’s place and the services that they provide to the community.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in nursing?
Nursing is a noble profession that allows you to make a positive impact on the lives of others every day. Approach your career with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to providing high-quality care to those in need.
