Health Canada is updating the application process for medical devices requested through the Special Access Program (SAP), introducing a new accessible application form and secure online submission tool designed to reduce errors, improve information security and support more efficient processing. 

What’s changing? 

Organizations can begin using the new application form and secure online submission tool immediately. The new accessible PDF form is designed to make it easier for applicants to provide complete and accurate information, while the secure submission tool helps protect patient and clinical information during transmission. 

Important deadline: February 1, 2027 

Starting February 1, 2027, Health Canada will only accept SAP applications using the new application form and submitted through the secure online submission tool or by fax. 

What organizations should do now 

Organizations that use the SAP should: 

• Update internal workflows and application templates; 

• Replace outdated saved links and application materials; and 

• Ensure staff are familiar with the new requirements ahead of the February 2027 deadline. 

Starting the transition early can help avoid delays once the new requirements become mandatory.
