What drew you to a career in healthcare?

I always had a passion and interest in healthcare, as my mother was a licensed practical nurse (LPN). While attending Memorial University (MUN) studying Business, an opportunity arose for me to participate in a healthcare-based work term placement with a local health authority. During my undergraduate studies (B.Comm), I had the opportunity to participate in 2 work term placements in healthcare which inspired me to learn more about the industry. Healthcare is an industry unlike any other, where business, administrative and health professionals work together with a common objective – providing safe and quality patient care, which makes a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis.

It's a very rewarding career in an industry that we all rely on to be at its best – always.

In your view, what does the future of healthcare procurement look like?

Healthcare procurement faces different challenges in comparison to other industries in that it requires a particular risk balance between cost efficiency, value and safe quality patient care. As a result, the future of healthcare procurement will certainly involve a shift from operations to strategic procurement opportunities, including industry partnerships, investment in technology, innovation, and value-based decision making by leveraging data to support strategy.

What makes the mission of HealthPRO Canada meaningful to you?

HealthPRO Canada is a critical partner in the delivery of Canadian healthcare. The mission of delivering quality patient outcomes and driving healthcare innovation is what’s most meaningful to me. These mission values are what all health organizations across the country are striving for – in with which HealthPRO Canada are clearly aligned.

What are your personal interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family in the outdoors. I am married with 2 daughters. We live in the beautiful province of Newfoundland and Labrador and certainly enjoy camping and other outdoor activities – when the weather allows 😊.

Favourite quote or motto?

“Work hard, be kind and amazing things will happen.”

You’ve held finance roles across the healthcare industry and even in the software development industry. How are these two industries different? How are they similar?

While healthcare is certainly very different than most industries, including software development, there is one specific commonality that resonates with me – the speed of change and the requirement to keep up! This similarity certainly creates the need for healthcare (like software development) to be continuously improving through innovative thinking, leveraging technology and forming strategic partnerships to ensure the delivery of the best possible “product” for our “customer”.
