Dr. Carolyn Gosse sat down with us to talk about her career journey, personal insights, and her vision for the future.

What drew you to a career in healthcare?

My decision to pursue a career in healthcare was highly influenced by my mother and grandmother’s example. They were both nurses and my mother in particular was a healthcare professional who worked with vulnerable patient populations. She always took great pride in providing excellent patient care, but was equally focused on caring for the whole person and always including caregivers on the care process.

In your view, what does the future of healthcare procurement look like?

Healthcare procurement has been increasing in complexity since the pandemic. There have been numerous market changes, creating challenges such as reliable production and backorders, however the urgency of the pandemic also drove a keen sense of innovation and collaboration across the health system. The pandemic demonstrated how critical our healthcare system is and the extent to which our supply chains are vulnerable. This experience has spurred many organizations to review their procurement strategies and opportunities to strengthen partnerships and business models. The future of healthcare procurement will be based on innovative practices, security in supply chains and augmenting best practices with data and AI tools.

What makes the mission of HealthPRO Canada meaningful to you?

HealthPRO Canada’s vision is in alignment with my view as a healthcare leader. We have a responsibility to support the broader health system, be great partners with all key stakeholders, and be leaders in aiming for the highest quality products and services, and supporting excellent and safe patient care. While supporting this aim, HealthPRO Canada is also a leader in ethical procurement and has a clear goal of driving value for the broader health system and the public.

With an accomplished and impressive career, what are you most looking forward to in this next chapter?

I’ve been incredibly privileged throughout my career in having the opportunity to work across many sectors. I’ve held roles in home care, long term care and acute care. At this stage of my career, I still have a keen desire to help improve the healthcare system and continue to innovate with partners on new models of care that address the Quintuple Aim of the healthcare system. As I’ve built on my experience across the health system, I feel a responsibility to contribute beyond my current organization and lend my experience and expertise to the broader system. I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the health system as a member of the HealthPRO Canada Board.

What are your personal interests outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family as well as my two golden doodles, Leo and Bailey. I enjoy reading in those rare quiet moments and enjoy the outdoors when the weather cooperates.

Favourite quote or motto?

“Change moves at the speed of trust”; this quote sums up nicely the critical need to build trust and collaboration if we want to drive change in our healthcare system.

What strategies do you believe are most effective in ensuring seamless collaboration among various healthcare providers in an integrated system, particularly when managing the care of older adults?

Over the last decade, my career has been focused on designing and implementing new models of care. These new models of integrated care are focused on integrating care pathways across the continuum of care, with the goal of increasing health system capacity and access to care, by shifting care to the home. Patient and provider experience is an equally important objective, and we continuously measure our outcomes on an ongoing basis. True health system redesign can any be accomplished when frontline staff, patients and caregivers are deeply embedded and engaged in the program design. To successfully integrate pathways, partners from across the system need to be empowered to bring their value and perspective to the broader team.
